Professional Tattooing Starts With the Right Artist

Premier Tattoo is a locally owned tattoo and piercing studio at 1959 East Pershing Road, Decatur, Illinois 62526. Getting a tattoo is a permanent decision, and the quality of the work depends almost entirely on the artist you choose. We work with clients who want something that will still look sharp twenty years from now—not just something that looks good in the chair. Whether it's a first piece or an addition to existing work, the process is the same: you deserve an artist who listens, draws well, and knows how to work with your skin.

Walk-in clients come in, describe what they want, and our artists assess placement, size, and style. For custom work, a design is drawn and reviewed before a stencil is applied to the skin for the client's approval. Once the placement is confirmed, the tattoo begins. After the session, aftercare instructions are given verbally and in writing — we explain exactly what to do and what to expect during healing so clients leave with confidence.

Size, placement, level of detail, number of colors, and the complexity of the original concept all affect pricing. A fine-line wristpiece and a full-color sleeve are entirely different scopes. Complexity is not a reason to avoid a custom design—it is a reason to talk to us before assuming a price. Walk-in pieces that can be quoted on the spot are typically simpler; custom work and cover-ups are priced after a consultation.

The risk of choosing a studio based on price alone is a tattoo that doesn't hold, fades unevenly, or sits wrong on the body. Our artists are fully trained and hold every piece to the same standard: clean lines, proper needle depth, and results that last. That consistency is what brings clients back from Decatur, Forsyth, Mount Zion, and across central Illinois.

Every Style We Offer Is Built to Last

From your first tattoo to a full sleeve, our artists work across the styles listed below—bring reference images or describe what you're after and we'll tell you what we can do.

Fine-Line Work

Precise, delicate linework that photographs cleanly and holds definition on fair and dark skin tones alike — best for botanical, script, and minimalist designs.

Traditional and Bold

Strong outlines, saturated colour fills, and high-contrast compositions that age well and read clearly from a distance — ideal for classic imagery and iconic pieces.

Black and Grey

Shading-forward work using varying needle pressures and diluted inks to build dimension and depth — a versatile approach for portraits, landscapes, and realism.

Illustrative and Custom

Original artwork drawn specifically for your body and placement, blending styles or creating something entirely new — this is where a design consultation starts.

Illinois Tattoo Age Rules Are Strict — Here Is What You Need to Know

Illinois law sets the minimum age for tattoos at 18. There is no parental consent exception for tattoos under any circumstances—this is not a studio policy; it is state law, and Premier Tattoo follows it without exception. If you are under 18 and want a tattoo, you will need to wait.

Piercings follow a different rule. Clients under 18 can receive a piercing at Premier Tattoo with a parent or legal guardian present at the time of the procedure. Both the minor and the adult must bring valid photo identification—no exceptions are made. If you are not sure what counts as valid ID, call us ahead of your visit at 217-475-1108 before making the trip.

Clients 18 and older should bring a valid, government-issued photo ID to their tattoo appointment. We check ID routinely. If you arrive without identification, we cannot complete the service that day.

Common Questions Before You Book

  • How much does a tattoo cost at Premier Tattoo in Decatur?

Pricing depends on the size, placement, detail level, and style of the piece. Simple walk-in designs are quoted on the spot when you come in. Custom work and cover-ups are priced after a consultation, since the scope varies by design. Call 217-475-1108 or stop in and we can give you a realistic range for what you have in mind.

  • Do I need an appointment to get a tattoo, or can I walk in?

Walk-ins are welcome at Premier Tattoo Monday through Saturday, 10 AM to 7 PM. You do not need an appointment, though booking ahead guarantees your preferred time slot and gives us a chance to prepare for custom work. After-hours appointments are also available on request — call us at 217-475-1108 to arrange one.

  • What should I bring to my tattoo appointment at Premier Tattoo?

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID — we check ID for every tattoo client regardless of age. If you have reference images, sketches, or examples of the style you want, bring those too. Wear clothing that gives comfortable access to the placement area, and eat a meal before your session.

  • How long does a tattoo take to heal, and when can I get a touch-up?

Most tattoos go through the initial healing phase in two to three weeks, with deeper skin layers settling over the following four to six weeks. We recommend waiting at least six weeks before a touch-up so the skin has fully settled. We provide written aftercare instructions with every session.

  • Can Premier Tattoo do a touch-up on a tattoo I got somewhere else?

Yes. We assess outside work on a case-by-case basis during a walk-in consultation. Touch-up pricing and feasibility depend on the condition of the existing ink, the original artist's technique, and what correction the client wants. Come in during business hours and we can take a look.
